In a bold statement, President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria is poised to transform the challenges posed by climate change into opportunities for economic transformation and sustainable development.
Addressing a product launch event by NETZENCE Sustainability Limited, a sustainability technology and management company, Tinubu acknowledged the devastating impacts of rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting rainfall patterns on Nigeria’s communities, agriculture, and economy.
“These changes threaten the very foundation of our development and the well-being of our people,” the President stated. “Yet, within this challenge lies a tremendous opportunity to reshape our economy, embrace sustainable development, and position Nigeria as a leader in the global fight against climate change.”
Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Uche Nnaji, explained that Nigeria has set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. This, he said, is not just a target, but a commitment to future generations, the environment, and sustainable economic growth.
To accelerate this goal, the President outlined several critical areas of focus, including clear and consistent policies, a robust carbon pricing mechanism, mobilization of green finance, embracing new technologies, driving innovation, and strengthening international partnerships.
“By focusing on these areas, Nigeria can achieve its net-zero target, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute meaningfully to global climate efforts,” Tinubu said. “But the benefits do not stop there. As we transition to a low-carbon economy, we will create new economic opportunities, generate jobs, and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians.”
The President commended NETZENCE Sustainability Limited for “taking the lead on this noble journey” and assured the company of the government’s collaboration through the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and other agencies.
Speaking at the event, the Founder and CEO of NETZENCE, Dr. Sadiq Sani, introduced the company’s new product, CloseCarbon, a carbon footprint tracking system designed to empower Nigeria in meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution goals and aligning with global net-zero targets.
“Our cutting-edge solutions will empower Nigeria to meet its 2030 emission reduction target, 2050 and 2060 Net Zero targets, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” Sani said.
The launch of CloseCarbon was welcomed by a diverse group of stakeholders, including the former Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Bello, and representatives from the Office of the Vice President, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, and the Jos Disco.
This initiative by the Nigerian government, in partnership with the private sector, demonstrates a proactive and forward-thinking approach to addressing the climate crisis and positioning the country as a leader in the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
