Sheikh Hasina Flees Bangladesh Amid Massive Protests

In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled the country following weeks of intense protests. The 76-year-old leader, who has ruled Bangladesh for over 20 years, resigned on August 5 and escaped to India under the cover of darkness. This unexpected departure has left the nation in a state of political and economic uncertainty.

The protests, which began on July 1, were initially sparked by demands for government job quota reforms but quickly escalated into a widespread movement calling for Hasina’s resignation and democratic reforms. The demonstrations, led predominantly by the country’s youth, saw violent clashes with security forces, resulting in over 300 deaths and numerous injuries. The government’s harsh response, including curfews, internet blackouts, and shoot-on-sight orders, only fueled the protesters’ resolve.

As tensions peaked, protesters defied a nationwide curfew and marched towards the Prime Minister’s residence. Faced with an ultimatum from the security forces, Hasina had no choice but to step down and flee. The army chief, General Waker-uz-Zaman, announced the formation of an interim government, pledging to restore order and oversee a transition
