Former Nigerian Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called for a merger of opposition parties in Nigeria to oust the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and prevent the country from sliding into a one-party state. Atiku expressed concerns that the APC is turning Nigeria into a dictatorship of one party and emphasized the need for a strong opposition to challenge the ruling party.

Atiku made these remarks during a meeting with the national executive committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Nigeria (IPAC). He urged opposition parties to come together and form a formidable alliance to counter the dominance of the APC. The goal of this merger would be to create a strong opposition force that can effectively challenge the ruling party and ensure a healthy democratic system in Nigeria.

The idea of a merger among opposition parties is not new in Nigerian politics. Atiku’s call for a merger echoes previous discussions and efforts to unite opposition parties against the ruling party. The aim is to consolidate resources, increase electoral chances, and provide a viable alternative to the APC.

However, it is important to note that the success of such a merger would depend on various factors, including the willingness of different parties to set aside their differences and work towards a common goal. Additionally, the issue of leadership and the selection of a presidential candidate would also need to be addressed to ensure a cohesive and effective opposition alliance.
