A tragic incident unfolded in Okpe-Abavo, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, as gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, killed a 55-year-old farmer, Mr. Friday Jegbefume, and kidnapped his wife, Mrs. Anthonia Jegbefume. The attack has left the village deserted, with residents fleeing to neighbouring communities for safety.

On Monday night, gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles stormed the residence of Mr. Friday Jegbefume at around 8 p.m. They shot him dead and kidnapped his wife. The attackers also injured Mr. Jegbefume’s son, Destiny, who managed to escape after a struggle.

Community in Fear

The once peaceful village of Okpe-Abavo has been thrown into chaos. Terrified residents have fled to neighbouring communities, leaving behind a few elderly men and women. The village, a quarter of the Abavo Clan, now stands largely deserted.

Authorities’ Involvement

The Chairman of Okpe-Abavo, Mr. Augustine Nkemachor, confirmed the incident and expressed the community’s desperation. He revealed that the police and some soldiers had been involved in the search for Mrs. Anthonia Jegbefume but to no avail. The community has been grappling with similar attacks for the past decade, with the situation worsening in the last year.

Eyewitness Account

Destiny, the son of the deceased, recounted the harrowing experience. He was in the bathroom when he heard his mother shouting. Upon opening the door, he saw the herdsmen and engaged in a struggle with one of them, resulting in a cut on his finger. He managed to escape by pouring water on the attacker and running away.

Call for Intervention

Community leaders are on their knees, appealing for government and security agencies’ intervention and assistance. The villagers are surviving by the grace of God, and the need for immediate action is urgent.

Police Confirmation

The Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident but could not ascertain if the attack was carried out by herdsmen. The investigation is ongoing, and the community awaits justice and the safe return of Mrs. Anthonia Jegbefume.
