Porto, June 28, 2024 – Bruno Onyemaechi, the Nigerian left-back who plays for Portuguese club Boavista, has credited his permanent transfer to the team as a key factor behind his impressive performances last season.

Onyemaechi, who initially joined Boavista on loan from Firense in the 2022/23 campaign, had his move made permanent in August 2023 for a reported fee of €1 million. The 25-year-old went on to make 24 appearances in the Portuguese top flight, registering one assist, while his market value rose to €3 million.

“The permanent deal really gave me much more confidence to be here and help the team,” Onyemaechi explained. “I thank the club for believing in me and my ability to contribute.”

Onyemaechi’s solid displays helped Boavista avoid relegation last season. Now, the Nigerian international is looking ahead to the future with optimism.

“I’m looking forward to what subsequent seasons will hold,” he said. “It was a privilege to be part of the AFCON squad, and I will continue to give my best to the national team whenever I get called up, so I can make it to bigger tournaments like the World Cup.”

Despite missing Nigeria’s last two 2026 World Cup qualifiers due to injury, Onyemaechi remains confident that the Super Eagles can still secure a spot at the tournament, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“We will do our best to get the maximum points required to make the World Cup,” he said. Onyemaechi made his debut for the national team in October 2023, featuring in a 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe, as well as in friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique.

With his future now secured at Boavista, Onyemaechi will be hoping to build on his strong performances and earn more opportunities to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
