In a shocking turn of events, a recent graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) lost his life while attempting to escape a harrowing tricycle robbery. The incident occurred late last night in the bustling city of Awka, Anambra State.

The Robbery

According to eyewitnesses, the victim, identified as Chukwudi Okonkwo, had just celebrated his graduation with friends and family. As he made his way home, he hailed a tricycle (popularly known as “keke”) near the university campus. Little did he know that this seemingly routine ride would take a tragic turn.

As the tricycle moved through dimly lit streets, a masked man suddenly brandished a knife and demanded Chukwudi’s belongings. Terrified, Chukwudi tried to escape by jumping out of the moving tricycle. His friend, Ifeoma, who was also in the vehicle, followed suit.

The Escape

Chukwudi and Ifeoma rolled onto the pavement, narrowly avoiding collision with oncoming traffic. Their desperate cries for help caught the attention of passersby, who rushed to their aid. The masked assailant, undeterred, fled the scene on foot.

The Aftermath

Emergency services arrived promptly, but tragically, Chukwudi succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital. Ifeoma, though injured, survived the fall and is currently receiving medical treatment at UNIZIK Teaching Hospital.

Community Outrage

The incident has sparked outrage among students, residents, and local authorities. UNIZIK students held a candlelight vigil in honor of Chukwudi, demanding increased security measures in the area. The police have launched an investigation into the robbery and are actively searching for the suspect.

UNIZIK Mourns

UNIZIK’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, expressed his condolences to Chukwudi’s family and friends. He emphasized the need for improved safety protocols around the campus and urged students to remain vigilant.

A Grim Reminder

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by commuters, especially during late hours. Authorities are urging citizens to report suspicious activities promptly and take precautions when using public transportation.

As the UNIZIK community mourns the loss of a promising graduate, questions linger: How can we make our streets safer? What measures can prevent such senseless violence? For now, Chukwudi’s memory lives on, a stark reminder that tragedy can strike unexpectedly.

May Chukwudi’s soul rest in peace. 🕊️
