Paris, France – Former world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he recently underwent a successful operation on his injured right knee.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion revealed the news on his social media platforms on Thursday.
Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the quarterfinals of the French Open earlier this month after scans revealed a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. The 37-year-old Serbian had been experiencing some discomfort in the knee in the lead-up to the tournament but the injury flared up during his five-set victory over Francisco Cerundolo in the third round.
In his social media post, Djokovic expressed his gratitude to the medical team that performed the surgery, stating that the procedure “went well.” He is now focused on his recovery and rehabilitation, with the goal of returning to the court as soon as possible.
The Serbian superstar did not provide a timeline for his comeback, leaving the status of his participation in Wimbledon, which is scheduled to begin on July 1st, uncertain. Djokovic’s withdrawal from the French Open meant that rising Italian star Jannik Sinner will become the country’s first world number one player next week.
The absence of Djokovic, as well as other tennis legends like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, will make the men’s final at the French Open a historic occasion, as it will be the first time since 2004 that the championship match will not feature any of the “Big Three” players.
