Zamfara State, Nigeria – In a bid to combat the escalating violence in the region, the Defence Headquarters has declared Halilu Buzu, a notorious terrorist leader, wanted for his alleged involvement in the recent spate of killings in Zamfara.
Hailing from Buzu in the Republic of Niger, Buzu is believed to be residing in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State, where he operates an illegal gold mine and engages in cattle rustling and arms smuggling.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operation, provided crucial details surrounding the ongoing efforts to neutralize Buzu and dismantle his criminal network. Major General Buba emphasized the military’s determination to eradicate both the operational capabilities and ideological foundation of the terrorists.
“Troops are actively engaged in various operational theaters across the country, focused on dismantling the terrorists’ infrastructure and apprehending their leaders,” stated Major General Buba. “Among the high-priority targets is Halilu Buzu, a terrorist leader from Buzu, Niger Republic, who has taken refuge in Subbubu Forest within Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State. His camp, as well as an illegal gold mine, has been traced to the Kawayi area in Anka LGA of Zamfara State.”
Buzu’s criminal activities extend beyond terrorism, as he is also notorious for his involvement in cattle rustling and illegal gold mining. Just last week, his gang allegedly carried out a heinous attack, resulting in the deaths of 19 innocent villagers in Farar Kasa. Major General Buba urged the Nigerian authorities to take immediate action in apprehending Buzu and holding him accountable for his atrocities.
Furthermore, Buzu has established a reputation as a prominent arms supplier, trusted by various dealers for procuring weapons from Libya. When faced with imminent danger, he frequently seeks refuge across the border in the Republic of Niger. As a result, the military is collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure Buzu’s arrest and subsequent prosecution for his crimes.
In their relentless pursuit of peace and security, Nigerian troops have made significant strides in combating terrorism and other criminal activities. Over the past week, they have successfully neutralized 227 terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, oil thieves, and other criminals. Additionally, 529 individuals involved in illicit activities have been apprehended, while 253 kidnapped hostages have been rescued.
The military’s operations have yielded substantial recoveries, including the discovery and destruction of 18 dugout pits, 34 boats, and 97 storage tanks. Additionally, a range of weapons, ammunition, and stolen goods have been seized. Notable recoveries include 89 AK47 rifles, 40 locally fabricated guns, 59 dane guns, and various explosive devices.
Major General Buba highlighted the troops’ role in preventing oil thefts worth over N1.3 billion in the Niger Delta region. The recovery of 231 assorted weapons and 6,441 ammunition rounds further demonstrates the military’s dedication to curbing criminal activities nationwide.
Major General Buba reiterated the military’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism and criminality, emphasizing that the safety and security of the nation remain paramount. He commended the troops for their dedication and sacrifice and assured the public that the military’s resolve in bringing an end to the atrocities would not waver.
