Renowned human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has taken up the representation of the students who were subjected to bullying at Lead British International School in Abuja.
Disturbing video footage capturing the incidents of bullying went viral on social media earlier this week.
In a phone conversation with our correspondent, Adeyanju expressed his commitment to the case and mentioned that he, along with the parents of the victims, held a three-hour meeting with the school’s Head to discuss the appropriate course of action. As part of ongoing investigations, the school management has decided to temporarily close the institution for three days.
One of the videos depicted a distressing scene where a group of four female students repeatedly struck another female student on her cheek while she helplessly endured the assault. During the attack, the assailants repeatedly inquired about the identity of a male student.
Confirming his involvement as the legal representative for the bullied students, Adeyanju stated, “I spent close to three hours with the parents of the victims at the school, and it is indeed a tragic incident. We had a conversation with the Head of the School, ensuring that the decision to temporarily shut down the school for three days was announced. This announcement was made. Rest assured, justice will be served.”
Abraham Ogunkanmbi, the Head of the School, released a statement affirming that a thorough investigation has been launched into the incident. A dedicated team has been appointed to gather information, review video footage, and conduct interviews with witnesses to ascertain the complete details of the incident and determine its underlying causes.
Ogunkanmbi further mentioned that the school has provided counseling services as well as disciplinary measures to both the perpetrators and the victims, and has reached out to their respective families. The school emphasized its deep concern regarding the incident and its commitment to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
Furthermore, Lead British International School, Abuja, plans to implement educational programs and workshops aimed at raising awareness about bullying and its consequences among students, staff, and parents. The school also appealed to the public to refrain from further sharing the video clips of the incident, respecting the privacy and well-being of those involved.
