In a significant development, two individuals suspected to be affiliated with the Boko Haram group voluntarily surrendered themselves to the troops of Sector 3 Multi-National Joint Task Force in Monguno, Borno State.
The surrender took place on Sunday, showcasing the ongoing efforts to dismantle Boko Haram’s operations in the region.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the Chief Military Public Information Officer of MNJTF, the surrendering individuals are identified as 19-year-old Abubakar Mohammed, also known as Garba, and 13-year-old Babagana Modu. These individuals, who were trained as improvised explosive device (IED) experts, confessed that they had been ordered to plant IEDs along the roads of Doron Baga and Fish Dam in Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Instead of carrying out their assigned task, the suspects made the courageous decision to abandon their mission, escape with the IEDs, and surrender themselves to the MNJTF. This remarkable turn of events highlights the effectiveness of psychological operations and the MNJTF’s recently concluded Operation NASHRUL SALAM, a non-kinetic operation, and the sector’s personal engagement strategy with relevant sources.
Upon their surrender, the security forces recovered two IEDs, two mobile phones, and a sum of fifty-three thousand Naira (N53,000.00) from Mohammed and Modu. This development further emphasizes the commitment of the MNJTF in encouraging other terrorists hiding in the Lake Chad Islands to follow suit, lay down their arms, and embrace peace, thereby fostering sustainable peace in the region.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi reiterated the unwavering dedication of the MNJTF to its mission of restoring peace and facilitating the return of normalcy to the Lake Chad Basin. This latest surrender marks another significant step forward in countering the activities of Boko Haram and brings renewed hope for lasting peace in the affected areas.
