In a recent meeting with leaders of the Yoruba socio-political Organization, Afenifere, President Bola Tinubu made it clear that individuals who pose a threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty and security will face severe repercussions.
Tinubu emphasized that his administration has made significant progress in combating banditry and kidnapping through intensified campaigns and enhanced intelligence gathering.
Addressing the delegation, which included prominent figures such as Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Oba Olu Falae, Tinubu firmly stated, “Those who believe they can undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty will bear the consequences. They will pay a price, and we will not waver in our efforts.”
The President’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s unity comes in the wake of recent events involving Yoruba Nation agitators. These individuals, donning military attire and armed with weapons, attempted to hoist the Yoruba Nation flag at the Oyo State Government Secretariat, advocating for the secession of the Yoruba people from the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Tinubu, however, remains resolute in his stance to maintain Nigeria as a unified entity.
Highlighting the importance of security, President Tinubu emphasized that those who endanger the nation’s sovereignty will face severe consequences. He stated, “I am unwavering in my dedication to Nigeria’s unity and constitutional democracy. Since assuming office, our commitment to constitutional democracy has been evident. Our current challenge is terrorism.”
Tinubu further asserted that the security of life and property is crucial for development, assuring that significant progress has been made in degrading terrorism and combating banditry and kidnapping. He emphasized that no ransom payments are made, and the battle against these criminal activities is being taken to the perpetrators with positive results, thanks to improved intelligence gathering.
Furthermore, President Tinubu expressed his administration’s focus on re-engineering Nigeria’s financial system to enhance citizens’ purchasing power and promote widespread prosperity. He emphasized the need to secure the country’s economic stability before pursuing more ambitious goals.
Recognizing education as a powerful weapon against poverty, Tinubu stressed the importance of investing in the future of Nigerian youth. He highlighted the establishment of the National Student Loan Programme as a means to address the challenges parents face in providing education for their children. Additionally, he outlined plans to implement a Consumer Credit Scheme to boost purchasing power and reduce the prevalence of fraud and corruption.
The President assured the Yoruba leaders that his administration would prioritize social security measures, including allowances for the unemployed, and emphasized the importance of fairness and equity in advancing Nigeria’s development.
In his response, Oba Olu Falae commended President Tinubu for his decisive actions, including the rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge and other critical ongoing projects. He urged the President to continue striving for fairness and equity for all Nigerians and emphasized the significance of constitutional amendments to devolve more powers to the states.
Oba Falae described President Tinubu as Africa’s most important political figure and conveyed the elders’ expectations for him to lead the country with knowledge, courage, and integrity. He assured the President of Afenifere’s unwavering support and commitment, pledging to stand by him as long as he remains faithful to the principles of fairness, integrity, and courage expected of a Nigerian leader.
President Tinubu concluded the meeting by expressing gratitude for the delegation’s prayers and support, emphasizing the importance of unity and diversity in bringing prosperity to Nigeria.
