The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) finds itself divided into two factions as they take opposing stances on the performance of Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power.
The controversy arose following the recent announcement by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) regarding revised electricity tariffs for Band A consumers, who enjoy a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily. The NERC stated that consumers in this category would now be required to pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant increase from the previous rate of N68.
In response to the tariff hike and the perceived lack of progress in ensuring stable power supply nationwide, Akinteye Babatunde, the factional Senate President of NANS, released a statement expressing concern over the minister’s performance. Babatunde criticized Adelabu’s alleged inability to address the persistent challenges in the power sector and called for his resignation.
However, another factional Senate President, Ekundayo Elvis, dismissed Babatunde’s claims and urged Nigerians to be patient with the minister. Elvis emphasized that despite the obstacles faced by the sector, Adelabu’s unwavering commitment to implementing reforms and driving projects demonstrates a positive shift toward resolving issues across the power value chain, including generation, transmission, and distribution.
Elvis further praised the minister for successfully completing power plant projects, addressing liquidity challenges within the power value chain, and expanding rural electrification efforts. He expressed confidence that Adelabu’s strategic approach and determination would lead to tangible improvements and lasting solutions, resulting in enhanced power supply nationwide. Elvis also commended the minister’s dedication to providing reliable and affordable electricity to all corners of the nation.
While expressing their unwavering support for the minister, Elvis criticized certain entities masquerading as student leaders who, motivated by self-interest and narrow agendas, attempt to undermine Adelabu’s commendable efforts through baseless criticism and unjustified attacks on matters crucial to the nation’s future.
Elvis concluded by urging the minister not to be discouraged by the demoralizing statements from the opposing faction and others, assuring him of the steadfast support of the apex student body.
