The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully restored the national grid to full operation, according to the statement made by Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for TCN.

The announcement comes after a previous confirmation of a grid collapse incident on Monday, April 15, 2024.

Earlier on Monday, TCN attributed the partial grid failure, which resulted in widespread blackouts, to a fire incident at the Afam Power Generating Station in Rivers State. The nationwide blackouts occurred when the national electricity grid collapsed at 2:00 a.m. on Monday, affecting various areas in the country.

Several Distribution Companies (DisCos), including the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JosDisCo), promptly informed millions of power consumers within their respective franchise areas about the incident.

Mbah, the TCN spokesperson, confirmed that the national grid collapse was caused by a fire outbreak at the Afam V 300kV busbar coupler, resulting in the tripping of units at Afam III and Afam VII in Rivers State, located in the South-South region.

The fire incident destabilized the grid, leading to a partial collapse of the facility, as stated by Mbah. However, TCN now affirms that the affected section of the grid has been fully restored and stabilized.

In their official statement, TCN announced, “At 02:41 Hours today, 15th April 2024, a fire erupted at the Afam V330kV busbar coupler, leading to the tripping of units at Afam III and Afam VI. This resulted in a sudden generation loss of MW and 305MW, respectively, destabilizing the grid and causing a partial collapse.”

During the incident, the Ibom Power Plant was detached from the grid and supplied electricity to parts of the Port Harcourt Region, mitigating the impact of the system disturbance.

TCN remains committed to enhancing the resilience and reliability of the national grid, and they pledge to continue investing in measures aimed at further strengthening the grid infrastructure.
