Two communities, namely Agojeju Odo and Abejukolo, located in the Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, have fallen victim to a violent invasion by unidentified gunmen.
The unfortunate incident has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 19 lives, with an undetermined number of residences reduced to ashes.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke with one of our correspondents in Lokoja, the incident transpired on Thursday when the assailants, mobilizing themselves for what seems to be a retaliatory act, unleashed havoc upon the two communities, causing widespread devastation.
These bandits, who had been engaged in a protracted conflict with the Agatu militia in neighboring Benue State, have now extended their campaign of violence to engulf Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi Odo, Bagaji, and nearby areas, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, including the ruination of valuable agricultural produce.
A local resident, who tragically lost his wife and children, disclosed that the herdsmen behind the attack targeted their community, accusing them of colluding with the Agatus in their clashes. Another local individual, speaking anonymously to our correspondent, appealed for urgent assistance from the state governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, and security agencies. He emphasized the urgent need for the deployment of additional security personnel to the area, as the existing police forces in the Local Government Council have been overwhelmed by the superior strength of the invaders.
Confirming the gravity of the situation, the State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, acknowledged the loss of 19 lives during the communal clashes that unfolded on Thursday. He further stated that the counter-terrorism unit of the state police command, in collaboration with the army, has been swiftly mobilized to restore peace and normalcy to the affected region. Efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The communities of Agojeju Odo and Abejukolo are currently grappling with the aftermath of this appalling act of violence, and the hearts of the entire region mourn the lives lost and the destruction inflicted upon innocent families. It is our collective hope that swift and decisive action will be taken to prevent further bloodshed and to provide the affected communities with the necessary support and security they desperately need in these trying times.
