The Northern Senators’ Forum has appealed to the Federal Government to take decisive measures in addressing the alarming rise in kidnapping incidents across the country.
Displaying their resolute commitment, the group has vowed to relentlessly pursue improved security conditions and ensure that the perpetrators of these reprehensible crimes face justice.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, the newly appointed chairman of the forum, highlighted the urgent need to address the recent surge in kidnappings, particularly in northern regions. The abduction of over 280 students from schools in Kaduna and the kidnapping of more than 100 internally displaced women in Borno State exemplify the gravity of the situation.
Expressing deep concern, Senator Yar’Adua drew attention to the distressing sequence of events in Kaduna State, which included the abduction of 286 students and staff on March 7, the heinous attack on worshippers in a mosque on March 8, and the subsequent abduction of 61 individuals on March 12. Additional incidents included the abduction of 14 persons on March 17 and a staggering total of 87 individuals in Kujuru on March 18, among others.
As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Yar’Adua emphasized the forum’s unwavering commitment to finding a lasting solution to the pervasive insecurity plaguing the nation. He affirmed, “We shall not relent until there is a significant improvement in the security situation. Protecting our people and our nation is our primary responsibility and we shall spare no effort in fulfilling it for the greater good.”
The Northern Senators’ Forum’s call for immediate action serves as a clarion call to the government, urging them to prioritize the restoration of security and the safeguarding of lives and property. With their concerted efforts, they aim to bring an end to the epidemic of kidnappings and restore peace and stability in the affected regions.
