The Labour Party (LP) has recently expressed its disappointment with its House of Representatives members, accusing them of failing to be true ambassadors of the Nigerian people. The party’s criticism is rooted in the belief that these lawmakers have not served the interests of the Nigerians who elected them.
The LP’s dissatisfaction was particularly directed at the party’s caucus leader in the House of Representatives, Hon Afam Ogene. Ogene had stated that it is unconventional for the party to conduct a convention before state, local government, and ward congresses. This statement, according to the LP, demonstrated Ogene’s lack of knowledge regarding the party’s constitution.
The LP emphasized that the national executive has a four-year tenure, while the ward, local government, and state executives have a three-year tenure. This distinction, they believe, is something Ogene should have been aware of.
The party also expressed concern over the lawmakers’ tendency to rush to the media whenever major decisions are made. They believe that these lawmakers, who are supposed to be the voice of the people, have not risen to the occasion.
The LP’s criticism raises a question: Are these lawmakers truly representing the interests of the Nigerians who elected them? Or are they merely flexing their muscles when it concerns the party?
The LP has warned that it will not hesitate to discipline any party member who does not respect the party’s supremacy. This warning sends a clear message to the lawmakers: they must respect the party’s constitution and the interests of the Nigerians who elected them.
In the face of these criticisms and warnings, one can only wonder: Will the LP’s House members rise to the occasion and become the true ambassadors of the Nigerian people they were elected to be? Or will they continue to disappoint both the party and the people who put their trust in them.
Only time will tell if these lawmakers will heed the LP’s call and truly become the voice of the Nigerian people. After all, as the saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.”.
