As the Muslim faithful commence the holy month of Ramadan today, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on Nigerians to offer special prayers against the nation’s security challenges and economic hardship.
In his Ramadan message, the Sultan urged Muslims to use the period of spiritual reflection and devotion to seek divine intervention in addressing the myriad of problems confronting the country.
“As we commence this holy month, let us intensify our prayers for the peace, unity, and progress of our dear nation,” the Sultan said. “We must beseech Allah’s guidance and protection as we navigate these trying times.”
The Sultan’s call for prayers resonates with the sentiments expressed by many Nigerians who have been grappling with the twin scourges of insecurity and economic hardship.
According to a recent report by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Nigeria is facing a “multidimensional crisis” characterized by poverty, inequality, and insecurity. The report noted that over 80 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty, while the country is ranked among the most dangerous in the world due to terrorism, banditry, and communal violence.
The economic situation is no less dire. Inflation has soared to a 17-year high, while unemployment and underemployment remain stubbornly high. Many Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet, and the holy month of Ramadan, with its increased expenses, is likely to put a further strain on their finances.
In the face of these challenges, the Sultan’s message of hope and resilience is a welcome reminder of the power of faith and community. By coming together in prayer, Muslims can find solace and strength during this difficult period.
As the Sultan rightly stated, “Ramadan is a time for spiritual renewal and introspection. Let us use this opportunity to reflect on our actions and intentions, and to recommit ourselves to the values of peace, compassion, and justice.”
May this Ramadan be a period of blessings, guidance, and renewed hope for all Nigerians.
