A peaceful Ottawa suburb is grappling with a horrific tragedy after a late-night stabbing claimed the lives of a young Sri Lankan family and their close friend. The victims, identified as Darshani Banbaranayake Dilanthika Ekanyake (35) and her four children – Inuka Wickramasinghe (7), Ashwini Wickramasinghe (4), Rinyana Wickramasinghe (2), and Kelly Wickramasinghe (2 months old) – were found dead inside their Barrhaven home on Thursday, March 7th, 2024. A 40-year-old family friend, Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon, was also found deceased. A 19-year-old acquaintance has been arrested and charged with the murders.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, with police tight-lipped on details as the investigation unfolds. However, the news has sent shockwaves through the Ottawa community, particularly among recent immigrants and the Sri Lankan community. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his condolences, calling it an act of “terrible violence” that has shaken the nation.

Local residents have gathered near the crime scene, leaving flowers and messages of condolence. Community leaders are organizing vigils to honor the victims. The Sri Lankan High Commission in Canada expressed their deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and pledged support.

Questions remain about the attacker’s relationship with the victims and whether there were any warning signs. Police have not yet commented on a possible connection or prior interactions.

This tragedy raises concerns about the safety of newcomers in Canada. While violent crime rates are generally low, this incident highlights the vulnerability of immigrant families settling into a new environment. Advocacy groups are urging authorities to ensure all communities feel safe and supported.

The Ottawa Police Service has assured the public of a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrator to justice. Support services are being offered to those affected by this tragedy, including neighbors, friends, and members of the Sri Lankan community. In the wake of this senseless act of violence, the Ottawa community is left to mourn the loss of an innocent young family and their friend.
