Kano’s Islamic Police Enforce Ramadan Fasting

Kano State’s Islamic police, known as Hisbah, have arrested 25 Muslims for eating or selling food in public during Ramadan. This enforcement aims to uphold Sharia law, which requires Muslims to fast during daylight hours.

Background and Enforcement

Hisbah officers actively patrol the streets to catch anyone breaking the fast. They have arrested 20 people for eating or drinking in public and five for selling food during fasting hours. These individuals will face charges in a Sharia court.

Mujahid Aminudeen, the deputy commander of Hisbah, expressed disappointment at seeing adult Muslims disregard the fasting rules. “We won’t condone that,” he said, “and that’s why we made these arrests.”

Sharia Law in Kano

Kano State has enforced Sharia law for over two decades. The law applies only to Muslims, with non-Muslims exempt from these regulations. Hisbah officers focus on maintaining public morality according to Islamic principles.

Lawal Fagge, a spokesman for Hisbah, noted that non-Muslims are not targeted unless they engage in activities that could tempt Muslims to break their fast. “We don’t arrest non-Muslims because this doesn’t concern them,” he explained.

Kano’s Social Implications

While many Muslims support these measures, critics argue that they can exacerbate tensions between different religious groups. The enforcement also raises questions about religious freedom in Nigeria.

Despite these concerns, the Hisbah Board remains committed to enforcing Ramadan fasting rules. They believe this is essential to maintaining the sanctity of the holy month.

Cultural Context

Ramadan is not just a period of fasting but also a time for community bonding and charitable acts. Understanding local customs and traditions can provide valuable insights into the cultural significance of this month.

Kano's

As Ramadan continues, the Hisbah Board will maintain its vigilance. This enforcement highlights the complex interplay between religion, culture, and governance in Nigeria.
